Kids Spanish Immersion & Enrichment Social Classes Aid Bilingual Parenting

A revolution in how children are taught Spanish is underway in California. Social teaching environments and bilingual learning bring new benefits for all participants.

Culver City, United States - August 10, 2018 /NewsNetwork/ —

California’s embrace of Proposition 58 in November 2016 opened the door to the reintroduction of non-English language teaching, most commonly Spanish, in public schools. Now imaginative education entrepreneurs all over the state are providing innovative ways for busy parents to immerse their kids in Spanish language and culture in preschool, after school and summer camp settings in an effort to make their children bilingual at an early age.

One of the most interesting philosophies emerging from the increased academic study on the effects a bilingual education has on children’s development is that social environments foster an almost unconscious learning of important language fundamentals. Young children very quickly grasp multi-language equivalence in numbers, colors, sounds and smells without tedious vocabulary exercises that are traditionally based on repetition and homework.

A new group of educators at Chiqui Social in Culver City CA aims to bring exactly this type of bilingual Spanish Immersion education to the wider Los Angeles area.

Owner Lizet Alvarez notes “One of the newest trends in public education is two-way immersion where two languages are taught side by side with the aim of functional bilingualism by the time kids get to Middle School. Chiqui Social helps develop those language skills in a fun, social setting.”

Alvarez adds “The first seven years of a child’s life is when their belief system is formed. Learning a different language can make them more aware of cultural differences. They also come to understand why those differences exist and the importance of respecting cultures different from their own.”

Chiqui Social is enrolling children now for all classes. The company’s goal is to develop a lifelong ability in children to communicate with people from other cultures, countries, and backgrounds and to expand their educational, professional, and social opportunities. Chiqui Social provides an ideal setting for gently exposing your child to one of the world’s most popular languages.

Climate change a top issue for European Parliament voters

May 26, 2019

LANGEOOG, Germany — Hungry tourists stream into the glass-fronted balcony of Michael Recktenwald's restaurant on the German island of Langeoog, with its splendid view of the North Sea and the blue skies above. The 53-year-old has lived on Langeoog for most of his life, and his wife's family has been there for generations, but Recktenwald fears their children may not be able to stay if the world keeps on warming. Concerns about climate change have prompted mass protests across Europe for the past year. For the first time, the issue is expected to have a significant impact on this week's...

Virtual reality helps police learn to interact with autistic

May 26, 2019

WASHINGTON — An autistic man walks out of a store without paying for a toy he picked up. He's followed by a storekeeper demanding he come back inside. The situation quickly escalates, and police are called. Officers arrive, their patrol car's lights flashing and sirens blaring, to find the man in the parking lot, yelling and not responding to their commands. They have a choice: confront the man and risk having the situation turn violent or regroup to figure out a different approach. The scenario is part of a virtual reality simulation for police that's being developed by Axon —...

Schools turn to technology to reduce toll during shootings

May 26, 2019

LOS ANGELES — Efforts to combat school shootings are shifting toward software and other technology to reduce the number of victims. Security experts say gunshot detection systems, apps and artificial intelligence are becoming more common because school attacks, while relatively rare, have been among the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. The technology is often used in combination with mental health and anti-bullying programs. Schools in Beverly Hills and others nationwide are adopting a strategy that aims to speed up the law enforcement response to shootings. Beverly Hills officials have added armed security guards, surveillance cameras and an app to...

Many online climate change lessons are actually junk

May 26, 2019

When science teacher Diana Allen set out to teach climate change, a subject she'd never learned in school, she fell into a rabbit's hole of misinformation: Many resources presented online as educational material were actually junk. "It is a pretty scary topic to take on," said Allen, a teacher at Sanford Junior High School, in southern Maine. "There are some pretty tricky websites out there. You kind of have to be an expert to be able to see through that like, 'Oh, no, these guys aren't telling you the truth.'" There are materials produced by climate change doubters, lesson plans...

SoftBank profits rise, partly on gains from Saudi-tied fund

May 26, 2019

TOKYO — Japanese technology company SoftBank has reported a 36% year-on-year increase in profit for the fiscal year through March, partly on gains from its Vision Fund. After the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, SoftBank said it would diversify sources of its funding for investments. Much of the Vision Fund money had come from Saudi Arabia. SoftBank Group Corp., whose mobile subsidiary is boosting its stake in Yahoo Japan to 45% from 12%, said Thursday that its annual profit totaled 1.4 trillion yen ($12.8 billion). The Tokyo-based company did not break down quarterly net profit figures, or offer forecasts....
