Lava from Hawaii volcano enters ocean from 3 flows

May 25, 2018

HONOLULU — Lava entered the ocean from a third flow, marking the third week of a Hawaii volcano eruption that has opened up nearly two dozen vents in rural communities, destroyed dozens of buildings and shot miles-high plumes of ash into the sky. Low lava fountains were erupting from a nearly continuous 2-mile-long (3.22-kilometer) portion of the series of fissures that have opened up in the ground, scientists said Thursday. The fountains were feeding channelized lava flows down to the coast. The eastern-most channel split, creating three ocean entries Wednesday. Since the eruption began on May 3, Hawaii County has...

The Latest: 3 lava flows now reaching ocean off Hawaii

May 25, 2018

HONOLULU — The Latest on the eruption of Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island (all times local): 3:10 p.m. Three lava flows from an erupting volcano are now flowing into the ocean off Hawaii's Big Island. Hawaii County officials say the third flow started pouring into the sea Thursday. Lava is spewing from a fissure in a rural community that's feeding the two other flows that are reaching the waves. Scientists say the Kilauea volcano isn't letting up on its three weeks of wild activity. Besides the airborne shards of glass and acid formed when lava hits seawater, explosions at...

The Latest: Official: Lava wall protecting geothermal plant

May 25, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii — The Latest on the eruption of a volcano in Hawaii (all times local): 1:15 p.m. Officials say lava spatter from Hawaii's erupting volcano is creating a wall that's helping protect a nearby geothermal plant. U.S. Geological Survey scientist Wendy Stovall said Wednesday that lava erupting from a vent closest to Puna Geothermal Venture is shooting higher than lava coming out of other vents. She says it's also producing the highest lava wall, which is blocking molten rock from flowing north toward the plant. Residents have been concerned about hazards if lava flowed over the plant's facilities or...

Workers plugging energy wells as lava flows nearby

May 25, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii — Authorities were racing Tuesday to close off production wells at a geothermal plant threatened by a lava flow from Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. Workers were capping the 11th and last well at the plant to prevent toxic gases from wafting out after lava entered, then stalled, on the property near one of the new volcanic vents. "Right now, they're in a safe state," Mike Kaleikini, senior director of Hawaii affairs for the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, said of the wells. There also were plans to install metal plugs in the wells as an additional stopgap...

The Latest: Lava almost cut Hawaii man's leg in half

PAHOA, Hawaii — The Latest on the eruption of Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island (all times local): 5:30 p.m. A Hawaii man hit by a flying piece of lava says the molten rock nearly cut his left leg in half. Darryl Clinton told the Honolulu television station KHON that he was on the roof of a home helping to put out fires from flying rocks on Saturday morning. That's when an explosion a couple hundred yards away launched a "lava bomb" his way. It hit him above the ankle. Clinton says it was the "most forceful impact" he had...
